Concrete vs. pavers is one of the most common decisions Bay Area homeowners face when planning a driveway, patio, or walkway project. Both are legitimate choices. Neither is universally better.
Initial installation cost
For a standard driveway or patio, quality concrete (broom finish) is typically less expensive per square foot than pavers. Stamped concrete and comparable quality pavers are often in a similar price range.
Long-term maintenance
Concrete requires resealing for stamped/colored work (every 2-5 years). Pavers require joint sand maintenance and occasional releveling. For low-maintenance preferences, concrete is often the better choice.
Repairability
A cracked paver can be removed and replaced invisibly. Cracked stamped concrete requires section replacement with color matching that is almost never invisible. Pavers win on repairability.
When to choose concrete
Choose concrete when cost efficiency is a priority, the surface is primarily functional, you want a monolithic surface with no joints to maintain, or you want the visual impact of stamped work at a lower cost than comparable pavers.
When to choose pavers
Choose pavers when you want the ability to replace individual units, prefer natural stone or brick aesthetics, or your HOA specifies pavers.
